When non-forensic psychologists provide traditional mental
health services such as evaluation and/or psychotherapy, their client is the
individual receiving the evaluation and/or psychotherapy services. On
the other hand, clients of forensic psychologists are generally one of the
following: |
| |
Courts |
Judges |
State Attorneys or Federal Prosecutors |
Public Defenders or Private Criminal Defense Attorneys |
Personal Injury Attorneys |
Family Law Attorneys |
Employment Law Attorneys |
Victims’ Rights Attorneys |
Government Agencies such as the Social Security
Administration |
Insurance Companies
It should be noted that the Specialty Guidelines for Forensic Psychologists (APA, 1990)
explicitly state that forensic psychologists are not to provide services to
a defendant or any other party involved in a legal proceeding until that
individual is represented by legal counsel.
